Patrick D. Herron

Senior Associate - Registered Patent Attorney

Patrick D. Herron is a registered patent attorney who practices intellectual property law, with particular focus on the preparation and prosecution of patent applications. Pat has prosecuted patents in the following technologies: gas turbine engines, wind turbines, locomotive systems, medical devices, casting, welding, communications, motion detection systems, and parachute equipment, among others.

Pat began his career with a B.S. in mechanical engineering from Penn State University. He worked as a manufacturing engineer for a Fortune 500 manufacturing company, and then in technical support, quality control, and manufacturing for a manufacturer of electrical equipment used in power distribution applications. Pat continued to work when he entered law school. His first position in the intellectual property field involved performing prior art patentability searches for a major search company. In addition, he worked as a Certified Legal Intern at the State Attorney’s Office for the Sixth Judicial Circuit of Florida, an intern for the United State Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida, Tampa Division, and as a student intern for former Chief Judge Kovachevich of the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida, Tampa Division.

As a judicial intern, Pat substantially participated in the research and drafting of several orders, including an order involving a case of first impression for the District. Judge Kovachevich invited Mr. Herron to return for another semester as the Stetson Student Liaison, where he was permitted to assist in the research and drafting of an order concerning a habeas petition in a case where the State of Florida imposed a sentence of death. Pat was only the second student intern in that program ever to be allowed to work on such an assignment.

Prior to entering law school, Pat served as a police officer for the city of Akron, OH. Also, as part of his own transportation business, Pat and his wife traveled the United States, visiting over 350 cities in 43 states in under two years. Pat enjoys sea kayaking, any kind of gadget, and painfully hot foods.
